[PT] O arquitecto Português Paulo David foi distinguido com a medalha Alvar Aalto 2012. O trabalho deste arquitecto, com o ateliê sediado na Madeira, revela uma autenticidade e intensidade únicas. A Medalha Alvar Aalto é atribuída a um arquitecto ou ateliê de arquitectura em reconhecimento de um contributo significativo para a arquitectura. A medalha tem sido tradicionalmente atribuída pela data do aniversário de Alvar Aalto (3 de Fevereiro). O prémio é concedido pela Comissão Medalha Alvar Aalto, que representa a Fundação Alvar Aalto, a Associação Finlandesa de Arquitectos/SAFA, a Fundação para o Museu de Arquitectura da Finlândia, a Sociedade Finlandesa de Arquitectura e da Cidade de Helsínquia. A Comissão da Medalha nomeia um Júri de especialistas, que escolhem o destinatário da distinção.
Segundo o júri "o trabalho de David é localmente enraizado, mas ao mesmo tempo universal. É um alerta oportuno de que a arquitectura pode ser calma, serena, lírica, poderosa e "não-espectáculo". A sua obra continua a busca constante por uma arquitectura adequada, relevante e autêntica que se funde com a paisagem. O trabalho respeita e responde à "história, tempo, lugar, cultura e tecnologia" - a sua arquitectura é uma resposta, não uma imposição".

[EN] Portuguese architect Paulo David was distinguished with Alvar Aalto medal 2012. The work of this architect, with his office based in Madeira, reveals a unique authenticity and intensity. His work shows a strong relationship with the local, history, the territory. The architecture integrates the landscape and makes part of it.
The Alvar Aalto Medal is awarded to an architect or architectural office in recognition of a significant contribution to creative architecture. The medal has traditionally been presented on or around Alvar Aalto’s birthday (February 3).
The prize is awarded by the Alvar Aalto Medal Committee, which represents the Alvar Aalto Foundation, the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA, the Foundation for the Museum of Finnish Architecture, the Finnish Architectural Society and the City of Helsinki. The Medal Committee appoints a jury of experts, who select the recipient of the honor.
In the words of the jury, “David’s work is locally rooted, yet at the same time universal. His is a timely reminder that architecture can be quiet, serene, lyrical, powerful and well removed from spectacle. His work continues the search for an appropriate, relevant and authentic architecture that fuses with the landscape. The work respects and responds to ‘history, time, place, culture and technology’ – his is architecture of response rather than of imposition.”
